Once A Pirate, Always A Pirate

Information

Nurse’s Corner

In preparation for a healthy school year, I would like to remind you of protocols COLLINSVILLE ISD has in place to support a safe and healthy school environment.  We need your assistance as we work together toward this common goal.  You can help us by encouraging healthy behaviors at home and following a few guidelines for keeping your children home when they are not feeling well.

Do not send your child to school with an illness that could spread.

Do not send your child if he/she would be miserable all day or would distract the other children.

Have "just in case" care for your child in the event you are unable to stay home with your sick child.

  • Unusually tired, pale, difficult to wake, confused or irritable, with lack of appetite are good indicators of illness.

  • If your child has minor cold symptoms, he/she may not need to be kept home from school. A long-term, (chronic) greenish nose discharge, and/or a chronic cough are symptoms that should be seen by a doctor.

  • If your child has two or more watery stools in a 24-hour period, especially if your child acts or looks ill, please keep them home for a 24-hour period.

  • Your child may attend school after receiving medical treatment. (Untreated ear infections can cause permanent hearing loss, and even more serious problems.)

  • If your child has thick mucus or pus draining from either eye, or has had crust in the lashes. Please keep them home until treatment. Your child can attend school 24 hours after starting medical treatment.

  • If your child has a Temperature of 100 or higher it is considered a fever. If they have fever, the student must be fever FREE for 24 hours (without fever reducers) before returning to school.

  • If your child has a body rash, especially with fever and itching please keep them at home. Your child may return after proper medical treatment and a free from communicable disease letter from a physician.

  • If your child has vomited two or more times within the past 24 hours, they may not return until they have not vomited for a 24 hour perio

  • If your child has a sore throat with fever, or swollen glands in the neck please keep them home. They may return 24 hours after medical treatment or 24 hours fever free without fever reducers.

  • If lice or nits are found in your child’s hair, the parents will be notified for treatment to be initiated.  Per Texas HB1566, notification letters will be sent home to all students in class with an active case.

We will isolate students who have symptoms of contagious illness and

call parents immediately for them to be picked up.

PLEASE encourage your child to wash his/her hands after using the restroom, coughing or sneezing, before eating and after playing outside or with pets. Also remind your child of cough and sneeze etiquette of using a tissue and not their hands or sleeves.  We want to start encouraging healthy habits now. This will help cut down on our students’ chances of contracting illness and spreading to others.

If you have any questions, or your child is sick and at home please call or email and inform me of his/her symptoms. I continue to be in close contact and assist the Grayson County Health Department to track illnesses, so I send a report to the Health Department weekly. If needed, you may contact me at dmweaver@collinsvilleisd.org or 903-429-3077.     Dawn M. Weaver, RN., Collinsville ISD- District Nurse
