The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (McKinney-Vento Act) safeguards that all Collinsville ISD students in homeless situations are provided with equal opportunity to enroll, attend, and succeed in school. 

What is the McKinney-Vento Act?

The McKinney-Vento Act, passed in 1987 (last amended in 1994), is federal legislation addressing homelessness.  It guides the education of children and youth who are homeless.     

How does a family know if they are eligible?

• Under the McKinney-Vento Act, a child or youth of the family who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence qualifies.  The type of living situations could include:
• those who share housing with others.
• staying in a homeless shelter
• occupying a motel or campground
• living in cars, parks, public spaces, empty buildings, train stations, or substandard housing

What does the eligible child or youth have the right to?

•  A free, appropriate public education
• Enrollment and attendance in school immediately, even without required records (the school will work to help gather documents)
•  Enrollment in local school or school of origin (transportation provided, including to school of origin, if requested)
• Access to all programs and services for which the child or youth is eligible
